Valentines Canvas Vinyl Project

For this Cricut vinyl project idea we have picked up some small painters canvases from the craft store. They are inexpensive and give you a blank skate to work with. The canvas comes in white and for this idea we decided we wanted a black background. So we took some acrylic paint and painted them black. Once you do this you will want to let it dry well. Wet paint and vinyl don’t mix. Trying to stick vinyl over wet paint just doesn’t work. However the paint will dry quite quickly on the canvas.

With the canvas painted we can set up and cut our vinyl to go on them. We have made this project geared towards Valentines day, but the idea can be adapted to any holiday or even just as a general decoration. For this project idea we have used a few different fonts. Arial, Arial Black, Arial Narrow, and DB Heart Flourish. This is a Doodle Bat that we purchased from Scrappinfonts.com. We also used Sure Cuts A Lot to set up our vinyl cuts to make it easy to group thing s together and make them fit our project easily.

Now being that this project is for Valentines day we have chosen words like love, be mine, x’s and o’s, and other Valentines related stuff. You can adapt this project to any holiday, or decoration theme. With all our cuts set up in SCAL we have used some white Cricut vinyl to make our cuts with.

Once you have made your cuts on your Cricut or other craft cutter you need to remove the extra vinyl. Remove the unwanted vinyl by weeding it from the vinyl you want to keep. With the weeding done you can use some transfer tape to move the vinyl from the backing to the finished project. When applying the vinyl to a canvas it is a little tricky since the center of the canvas isn’t solid. Place the vinyl on the canvas and rub lightly, flip the canvas over on our counter and then rub the back of the canvas. This gives you a firm surface to get your vinyl to stick to the canvas.

Remove the transfer tape and you’ve got a nice little set of decorative canvases for your home. We also added a little rhinestone heart to one of them from the craft store. You could also cut a heart from another color of vinyl if you wanted, but we chose the rhinestones for the sparkle and dimension.
